Day 5 - No More Bathroom Scales
by Michael on 06/05/09 at 2:46 pm
I have put away my bathroom scales. Well, my partner, Ted, has put them away. If I “hid” them, I’d just drag them out at the first inkling that I wanted to weigh myself, which is right now actually. Let me tell you what happened. On Friday I weighed myself for my regular weekly weigh-in. (I’m a member of the Jillian Michaels website and Friday is weigh-in day.) I gained two pounds. So after four days of eating fairly decently and getting in four workouts, I gained two pounds! How is that possible? I freaked out and that led to an I-don’t-give-a-damn weekend.
After a couple of chocolate bars, a couple of bags of chips, and three big breakfasts at the greasy spoon on the corner, I recommitted to my program on Monday. I also weighed myself and the scale said I put on another two pounds. Geezuz … this is going in the other direction. Just after I challenged the world to come and watch me lose 100 pounds, I start putting it on.
I had a workout with my trainer, Phil, yesterday, and he asked me to put away the scales. Just for a month until I get over this hump. My body is going to be up and down and all over the place for the first month before it finally settles down. And as I’ve already experienced, monitoring the daily or weekly fluctuations will just drive me crazy. In Friday’s case, it drove me right into a weekend-long binge. So Phil’s advice makes sense, but it’s not going to be easy. I’ve done really well for the past couple of days: I’ve been eating breakfast as soon as I wake up, I’ve been measuring and weighing for better portion control, I’ve been drinking loads of water, and I’ve been working out. The problem is that when I look down I can see that shape of my belly has changed, and now, I want to find those scales so I can measure the success that I think I’m having. Yeah, I’m glad Ted hid those scales; I don’t need to know right now. I just need to keep pushing forward with this project. Imagine what a nice surprise I’ll have in a month.
