Day 1 — Did I Really Mean It?
by Michael on 27/04/09 at 4:58 pm
Well after writing that “I’m going to do it” post last night, I was really challenged this morning. Did I really mean it? Was I sure? I had no problem getting up, and then, I hit the computer for a few hours to get some work done. When I tried to wake up my partner for the gym, he said from under the covers, “I’m sick.” He had a sore throat and could barely swallow. Thoughts of not going to the gym immediately leaped into my head. As if I can’t go to the gym by myself. So I just hunkered down, grabbed everything I needed, and took off for the gym. I figured that I had better do it right away otherwise I’d talk myself out of it. I’m not quite a reformed excuse maker yet!
Today was scheduled to be a leg day, but I did cardio instead. I don’t really like doing weights by myself (excuse) so I worked on the elliptical trainer for 30 minutes. I did a cross-country program that just about did me in. After ten minutes on this thing, I was ready to give up. I was listening to the Jillian Michaels radio show on my MP3 player, so I tried to focus on what she was saying and forget about how I was feeling physically. Then I just kept saying, “No excuses. Push harder. You can do it.” And before I knew it, I was on that last three minutes. (I’ll tell you, knowing that I have to come here and report really helps me through these battles with my head. The last thing I want to do is have to blog, “Well I wanted to do 30 minutes, but I only did ten.”) Then I pushed a little harder and walked the track at the YMCA for 30 minutes.
The rest of my day was pretty good. I ate well and started tracking everything in the Diet & Fitness Journal that I picked up at the bookstore the other day. It’s a wonderful tool that breaks your day up into six meal slots. You detail what you ate and there’s space to note the calories, fat grams, carbs, fiber, etc for each item (if you want to get that detailed), and then, on the other side of the page, there’s room for your workouts. There’s space to count your water intact, as well as fruits and vegetables. It’s one of the best workout / diet journals that I’ve used. And a quick look at the end of the day tells me that I didn’t get enough water or fruit and vegetables. I’ll tackle that tomorrow. And I’ve got another workout session planned with my trainer, Phil.
