Day 3 - I Want Arms Like That!

Yesterday I talked about much different my workout was from one week to the next. But I’m also noticing a shift in my whole attitude, and not just pertaining to my weight loss project. I’m a really busy guy. I work on the web and at any given time, I have 19 different things happening. There’s always a huge to-do list and my desk is usually cluttered with books, magazines, and bits of paper — lots and lots of paper. So most of the time I feel overwhelmed. And when I don’t have a handle on this stuff, it’s harder to focus on me. Taking care of myself doesn’t become a priority and my mantra becomes: I’m too busy.
But since I got Beating the Bulge started a couple of weeks back and took a crack at starting my program I’m been feeling different. I still have just as much to do as I did before, in fact, I have more on my plate. But I’m looking at things differently. If I start a task, I see it through. Whether it takes one hour or four, it’s what I need to be doing in that moment. Everything else has to wait. When I’ve completed one task, I move onto the next thing I need to do. And I haven’t been feeling a lot of stress over what needs to be done. A lot of the time all of that other stuff chews away at me while I’m trying to work on something. It still does to a degree, but I’m able to say, “Later.”
Yesterday, when I was working out with Phil, there was a trainer wandering around the gym. He’s a tall guy and he has a beautiful chest and two of the most gorgeous, tattooed arms. I happened to be doing preacher curls, and as this trainer walked by, I said, “I want arms like that!” That’s a big step for me. I didn’t care what this trainer thought of me, how much I weighed, whether he thought it was possible for me to get arms like that, or if he was grossed out that another man was admiring his arms. In the end, he just smiled. It sounds like such a simple moment, and perhaps it is for most of you, but I tend to be so mired in the stuff going on in my head that I usually don’t grasp for moments like that.
It’s a beautiful, sunny day this morning and I’m feeling great. It’s going to be a good day. I’ve got a heap of work to do and an hour’s worth of cardio to kick out at the gym.
